DIY: Adapt the Songe shorts in French Terry

Moodboard: Nomadic Inspirations & Essentials

Winter never ends and we want softness, to feel comfortable in our clothes and cocooning outfits. With the Nomade capsule, which celebrates a comfortable wardrobe with a strong style, we have introduced a new product in the Maison Fauve fabric range: the French Terry sweatshirt fabric, as well as the ribbing in matching colors. This fabric is of magnificent quality: very thick but easy to sew, supple and soft, it is 100% cotton. And offering you the ribbing that matches your fabric seemed essential to me: no more headaches and poorly matched colors.

With this idea of offering at Maison Fauve a wardrobe that follows your desires, a new collection has appeared: Les Essentiels. The new Soupir pajamas and the Songe shorts and Blush camisole duo form a first set, to be Femme Fauve from morning to night in her hand-sewn outfits.

These two collections are in a state of mind that complements each other:

🔹 Nomade Collection : patterns and fabrics in shades inspired by nature, for a wardrobe that is equally suited to the outdoors as it is to a more urban silhouette, and cozy materials. See the capsule

🔹 Essentials Collection : basic and timeless patterns, for homewear that is both chic and relaxed. See the capsule

Combining patterns and fabrics season after season is always obvious to me, so the idea of a pair of activewear shorts in French Terry fabric quickly came to mind, especially since the Songe shorts and Ressac sweatshirt duo has incredible charm!

The inspirations

With these inspirations, we're going to transform our Songe short pajamas into a casual sweat knit outfit, perfect for around the house or to pair with a matching sweatshirt for a modern casual look .

Why Choose French Terry?

French Terry is a slightly stretchy knit fabric, often used for sweatshirts. It offers a fluid drape while ensuring great comfort . Combined with a matching ribbed cuff , it provides a professional and neat finish.

Adapt the Songe Short Pattern in French Terry

1. Choice of Supplies

The width of our French Terry fabric is 180 cm, you will only need 70 to 80 cm depending on your size. The table below summarizes the consumption and placements on our fabric.

The amount of ribbing and elastic is provided according to your grading size in the table below.

You will also need:

  • Overlocker bobbins to match your fabric. Our overlock threads

  • Classic thread and a double needle for pretty finishes. Our bobbins

  • Small clips, preferable to pins for sweatshirt fabric. Our clips

  • There is no need to iron on the fabric.

🔹 Fabric advice : for a nice result similar to our visuals, opt for a French Terry with good support (minimum 240 g/m²).

2. Pattern modifications

Seam allowances : The Songe pattern is initially designed for warp and weft fabric. The seam allowances are 1 cm. The assembly with the sweatshirt fabric will be optimal with an overlocker, make sure that your knife respects this margin.

Elasticated waist : for a finish that keeps the sportswear codes of the outfit, and for a really easy assembly, replace the classic belt with a stretch ribbed band that will serve as a slide for your elastic.

Hems and finishes :

  • Use an overlocker for a clean and durable result.

  • On a sewing machine, use a stretch stitch or a light zigzag stitch .

  • For hems, a twin needle is ideal for a professional finish.

Pair the Shorts with a Matching Sweatshirt

For an ultra-comfortable set that will look just as good for homewear as for sportswear , sew a matching sweatshirt in the same French Terry. Opt for our beautiful Ressac pattern: comfortable, neither too wide nor too tight, it is full of pretty cutting and finishing details for a modern and relaxed look. See the pattern

🔹 Style tip : Pair this set with a denim piece, like a shirt or a windbreaker, to keep the slightly boyish spirit of the outfit while moving away from the first degree sportswear, and to vary the styles! You can also play on the colors and mix the sweatshirt in a fabric and the shorts in a fabric of the same quality and different color.

Conclusion

With these simple adjustments, the Songe French Terry shorts become an essential piece of the casual wardrobe. Comfortable, modern and very easy to sew , they are suitable for both relaxing days and casual outings.
