Divine gabardines

Each of our sewing patterns is offered to you with a recommendation for the choice of fabrics, so that you do not make a mistake when sewing your garment. At Maison Fauve, I am committed to offering you a sufficiently wide choice of fabrics, so that you can sew all of our patterns. And one material that we have been lacking until now, is making a very notable entrance into the Maison Fauve fabric library: gabardine .

Gabardine by Maison Fauve

I wanted it not to be too heavy, so that I could sew many different types of clothing. I also absolutely wanted it to be a 100% cotton gabardine , of a very good quality, and I explored at length the different materials offered by the manufacturers we work with before finding THE gabardine. It is made in Portugal, in workshops that we know well because they are also the ones who print our beautiful viscose poplins .

I also asked to carry out dye tests, in order to ensure the color fastness on this material (i.e. the ability of the material to retain its color, especially when washed). This was all the more important because for the Fauve Romance collection , we have quite specific colors, such as Jaune Sulphide , which require an impeccable result (I didn't want my beautiful neon yellow to fade).

Our new gabardine has a tight twill weave, with its characteristic fine diagonals, and above all it is extremely soft, the touch is slightly velvety.

How to sew gabardine?

Cotton gabardine is a stable fabric, very easy to sew. Since our fabric does not have elastane, we limit the risk of stretching it when transferring the pattern to the fabric and during the sewing steps. It does not slip, and the fact that it is not too thick means that your machine will not have too much difficulty in feeding it or sewing the thicknesses, for example when sewing a jacket collar or a jeans belt.

I recommend that you use this type of fabric:

  • Universal 80 gauge needles

  • Pins with a rounded head so as not to hurt yourself when pinning this fairly dense material

  • AVlieseline G700 type iron-on to give hold to your work, particularly on collars, cuffs, belts and the bottom of jackets

We also offer sewing threads and arange of matching buttons , made in France,  in order to have impeccable sewing down to the smallest details:

And for jackets like the Pilar jacket or the Hussard jeans , discover our range of Maison Fauve-branded denim buttons (find the little tutorial here to explain how to attach riveted denim buttons).

How do I finish my seams?

Gabardine is a fabric that frays very little. However, to finish your seams neatly, I recommend that you either overlock your seam allowances or border your pieces with a saddle bias , as we explain in the free video tutorial "sewing an unlined jacket" . If you are sewing a lined jacket like the Mimosa blazer , these precautions will not be necessary, the lining will be enough to protect the seam allowances from friction. We offer you on our site a complete range of cupro and viscose linings , more breathable than polyester linings.

How do I care for my gabardine clothes?

We recommend washing your fabric at 30° on a delicate cycle. I do not recommend using a tumble dryer, once your fabric or sewing is washed, relax them when they come out of the machine and then dry them flat or on a hanger to avoid creases.

Ironing will be done in medium ironing mode.
